UNMIL
United Nations Mission in Liberia

Closure of UNMIL

The United Nations Mission in Liberia was established in October 2003 to support for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement and peace process, and to assist with the maintenance and restoration of law and order throughout Liberia. The mission successfully completed its mandate on 30 March 2018.

Governance

DSRSG Antonio Vigilante addresses locals at a Peace Consolidation town hall meeting in Lofa County.

Within the CDG Pillar, activities of the Governance Section fall under three broad areas:

  1. Decentralization and County Governance - overall coordination of strategic advice and technical support to the Government’s decentralization and local governance policy implementation, including development of the Local Government Act and consolidation of state authority at sub-national level;
  2. Natural Resource Management - UNMIL’s strategic support and advice on the effective management of the natural resources sector – mining, agricultural plantations and forestry - for the benefit of the state, communities and investors; and
  3. Public Financial Management and Integrity – with a focus on monitoring and assessing the execution of the national budget in sectors critical to UNMIL’s transition and strategic support to the work of institutions promoting transparency and integrity issues that contribute to durable peace and development.
